Christine T. Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN
Christine Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN is the Mathy Mezey Professor of Geriatric Nursing at the College of Nursing at New York University (NYU), a Senior Fellow at the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at the NYU, an Attending in Nursing at the NYU Langone Medical Center, and serves on the executive committee of NYU’s Clinical Translational Science Institute. Kovner maintains an active research program involving studies on quality improvement, RN working conditions and the cost of nursing care.
Kovner is a principal investigator of a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aimed at studying the career trajectories of newly licensed registered nurses over the first ten years of their careers.
She is the co-author of Financial Management for Nurse Managers and Executives, now in its 3rd edition, has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, and has served as a grant reviewer for government agencies and foundations. She serves as the Senior Associate Editor of Policy, Politics, & Nursing Practice, and as a reviewer for many health-related journals.
In addition to these roles, Kovner is an advisor to government and private sector; for nine years she was a member of the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council and she is on the Steering Committee for New York’s Nursing Workforce Center.
Kovner earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Columbia University, her master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD from NYU. She completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship funded by the National Center for Health Services Research and Health Care Technology and was a senior Scholar at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Carol S. Brewer, PhD, RN, FAAN
Carol Brewer, PhD, RN, FAAN is a UB Distinguished Professor Emerita of Nursing at the School of Nursing University at Buffalo. Brewer conducts research that examines RN workforce participation decisions. She is currently funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a 10-year national panel study of newly licensed RNs and by the National Council of Boards of Nursing to examine RN perceptions of quality improvement knowledge.
She has been funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration as a senior analyst for the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to examine longitudinal workforce behavior of RNs in Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Brewer also is the Director of Nursing for the New York State Area Health Education System Statewide Office, developing NYS AHEC System nursing policy, and nursing and health care workforce development programs.
She serves as the Steering Committee Chair for the Institute for Nursing, the newly established New York State nursing workforce center, and is a member of the NYS Action Coalition Steering Committee to implement the IOM Future of Nursing report. She served on AHRQ’s Health Systems Research Study Section, and was a founding member and chairperson of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues Interest Group of AcademyHealth.
She earned her Ph.D. in Nursing Systems and a Master’s degree in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan, as well as a Master’s in Nursing from the University of Tennessee. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurses, and was awarded the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, the New York Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award from the New York State Nursing Association, and the UB Exceptional Scholar Sustained Achievement Award.
